Screening, Brief Intervention,
and Referral to Treatment
Doctor with patient
Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT)
is an evidenced-based approach used by medical professionals to talk with patients about use and misuse of alcohol and other drugs.
Doctor with client
SBIRT is similar to other preventive health care screening processes (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc), as it examines a patient's
current level and frequency of substance use and the associated health risks.
Doctor screening
Introducing conversations about alcohol and other drug use
into a regular health care visit is an emerging integrated health care practice.

We support healthcare organizations
to initiate SBIRT services into primary care.
