What is SBIRT?

SBIRT stands for Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment. SBIRT is a healthcare screening process used to prevent alcohol and/or drug use from negatively impacting your health.

SCREENING

  • Annually, when visiting your healthcare professional for a regular appointment, you will be asked a few questions about your alcohol and drug use.
  • Your healthcare professional reviews your responses and shares the screening results with you.

BRIEF INTERVENTION

  • Together with your healthcare professional, you may talk more about low-risk use, benefits and barriers to reducing your alcohol and/or drug use, and discuss steps to reduce your risks related to alcohol and/or drug use and improve your health.

REFERRAL TO TREATMENT

  • When an individual could benefit from additional services, the healthcare professional will provide a referral for specialized treatment services.
